“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:”
We walk with the Lord in these two areas: Holiness and Power. Jesus never dropped one for the other. We don’t have the option of choosing which commandment we obey. The same Lord that said “heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons” also said “be Holy, for I am Holy.” So why Holiness? Isn’t everything already done at the cross? Don’t I have my ticket to heaven? Are you saying what Jesus did isn’t enough?
This post answers these questions.
We have already established that without Holiness, no one will see the Lord. That brings up a lot of questions, but what I want to emphasize is not “will I make it to heaven or not?” I want to emphasize relationship with God.
We have had in our mindsets for too long “what can I do and still get to heaven?” This proves one thing: we don’t know what relationship with God really means. Jesus said “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3
Holiness is beautiful. It is very attractive when real, and very legalistic and ugly when false. The church has put people off by trying to get sinners to be Holy far before they meet God. How can you become Holy as He is Holy if you don’t even know Him? But once the Spirit of God comes to live inside of you, He changes everything. He makes you attractive. The world will want to be around you. This is what we desire. We want people to come to Jesus.
At work we have a regular who comes in to talk to us and hang out for hours. We have talked with him about Jesus and this is what he always says “you’re the most genuine Christians I know. If anyone is doing it right, it’s you guys.” Why did he say that? He didn’t have to say that. What is it? We aren’t hypocrites. He can see that we aren’t saying one thing and living another. He won’t let any other Christians talk to him about God, but he’ll let us do it.
This is what Holiness will achieve, and it all comes as a result of encounter with our wonderful creator. (Side note, God is real and can be touched!) You won’t walk in the Holiness God wants for you by trying to be Holy. God didn’t say do Holy, He said be Holy. What does that mean? Very simply it means set apart unto God. I like to think of it like this; being Holy means you’re different, you’re special. You’re God’s different. You’re God’s special. We’re called “saints” for a reason. Saint means “a Holy one”.
God’s grace, your willingness
So becoming Holy, sanctified and set apart is not of our own doing. We have to understand that. It isn’t works based, it’s all grace. God’s grace will give us the power to do it, but does that mean we do nothing? Absolutely not! “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1
Holiness is birthed by the love of God, but perfected by the fear of God. Notice though, it says “let us cleanse ourselves” whatever God convicts you of, obey that conviction! Seriously, wether it’s sin or not. Obey the conviction! That’s how you cleanse yourself. The reason for Holiness is clear: we want to be close to God, and represent Him well. The love of God brings you in, but the fear of God keeps you in.
He is like no other
As we live out our lives like Jesus, we become like Him. And He is unrivaled, unmatched and unequaled. He is Holy.
I pray that the Lord would set a fire in your soul for His righteousness. His Holiness. To the glory of God!
