Overcoming fears

Fear has a funny way of lying to you. Fear tells you that “it’s always going to be this way” or, “the worst will happen.” Your own fears are always more real to you than the ones someone else struggles with. So, is there a way out of fear, or is it something you’ll always struggle with?

My own struggle

I recently battled with fear myself. I was afraid of falling into pride. I don’t like what pride does to people. It’s actually very silly when you think about it. Especially when it comes to Supernatural Ministry. If we know anything, we know that God is the one who heals, speaks, delivers, and saves. So thinking that I had some strength in myself to accomplish that would be really laughable. However, fear whispered to me, “you see, that’s why you’re excited about speaking in front of people. You’re full of pride. You’re going to fall and lose your ministry. You’re going to ruin everyone around you by competing with them. You’re too proud to join this group of people. They actually love people. You just love being important.” And I believed it.

What a strange thing to be afraid of. You see, this fear tries to hit people who are confident. It made me double think my motives ALL THE TIME. Navel gazing is not the way to go! I’ve done it, and don’t suggest it. I struggled in this area because I wasn’t convinced that my motives were pure. Truthfully, I love sharing stories with people. I do love when I get to tell my story. It’s nice when people appreciate what I offer. However, that got played on by fear trying to tell me to sit back because I was “proud“.

Overcoming

What does God say about fear? And how do we overcome it?

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” ‭‭II Timothy‬ ‭1:7‬ NKJV

Fear is a spirit. Let me be more clear, fear is a demon. Demons talk to you by giving you their thoughts. Usually it’s accompanied with a feeling. They know your weaknesses, so they will play on them. That’s usually why you struggle with the fear you struggle with. Let me say something;

That fear is not yours. It doesn’t belong to you. You have not been given a spirit of fear. It’s a lie. You aren’t afraid. The devil is afraid. He’s afraid of Jesus, and if you know Jesus, he’s afraid of you. It’s not “your fear“.

Why am I telling you this? Jesus makes it clear;

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”” ‭‭John‬ ‭8:32‬ ‭NKJV

You may be thinking, “Easier said than done. If it’s not my fear, how do I overcome it?

Here’s how I overcame the fear of pride. First of all, I needed to know the truth.

On one hand, I didn’t want to react and become falsely humble. Like, saying all of the right things to cover up the fact that I was proud. “Oh it’s not me it’s Jesus.” Or “I’m just a lowly servant“. Now, you could truly say those things from a humble heart, but I would say them out of a fear of being proud. So that doesn’t work!

The opposite isn’t great either. You end up thinking that you’re so awesome, and everyone owes you. Well, you are awesome, but only because God says you are. Heck, before Jesus saved you, you didn’t deserve any of it. He’s the awesome one.

So what was it that changed my view? It was the truth that I really can’t do anything without God. I can’t produce any lasting fruit without Him. I can’t change people without Him. I can’t breath without Him, and I can’t even tell you about this without Him. If it wasn’t for God’s love, and the redemption of Jesus, I would have nothing. I am only grateful. I have nothing to brag about, except that He loves me and He is great!

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John‬ ‭15:4-5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

What’s the conclusion?

Well, if the truth is what makes us free, then we must ask God what the truth is about what we’re afraid of. God speaks to His children. Expect an answer. Open your Bible as well. The book has so much truth in it. You can believe every word of it and stand on it.

Be blessed my friends, and I believe this will bless you and encourage you to walk in confidence and boldness in faith.

“Finally my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” Ephesians 6:10
